Fantastic post, definitely never too old for a hostel, we took my 80 mother to YHA Boggle Hole and she loved it. I’ve not stayed in a dorm room since I was a teenager, always a private room and often en-suite.

Great tips there. I would endorse the carry a backpack one – if you have back problems, make sure you have one correctly fitted with a hip belt. Then almost all the weight goes on your hips – not your back – and the shoulder-straps are mostly for balance. This has made a world of difference for me.

Thanks for sharing Josie. I try & do many of these on my travels but have to admit to all the thoughts you shared about hostels. I feel like I spent my 20’s in hostel dorm rooms & now I’m older am more of a hotel & Airbnb traveller. You make a really good point though. Hostels in my experience are a much better way of interacting & hotels can be impersonal. I’m going to revisit the idea of hostels – thank you for inspiring me!

In reply to Lisa. Thanks Lisa. If you are nervous about hostels, perhaps look at a private room in some of the more boutique brands to start with. I know the Generator group that are in Europe have some lovely properties. They are almost as expensive as a hotel, but you get the benefits of meeting some of the other travellers and access to any discounted tours they might offer. After a good experience you will feel better about using other hostels. Happy travelling!

Thanks for sharing all these tips! I would love to be better at travel hacking. And you were right, I definitely cringed at staying in a hostel. I have only stayed in one my whole life and it was not a great experience but there was no planning to it so maybe if it was better planned, we wouldn’t have that issue
